Ian is currently the GIS Manager for Spokane County, a position he has held for the past 26 years. Spokane County’s GIS Program has twice been given ESRI’s Special Achievement in GIS award (2000, 2006) and cited as Outstanding GIS Program (2000) by the Washington Chapter URISA (Urban & Regional Information Systems Association). In 2004 he was given the John Wesley Powell by the USGS for Citizen Achievement in support of the National Map. In 2005 he helped establish the first GIS Center within Spokane’s Regional Emergency Operation Center; and in 2006 he helped establish the Spokane’s first multi-agency GIS-Based Economic Development Web Site. He has taught GIS at both Washington State University’s Interdisciplinary Design Institute and Eastern Washington University's Urban and Regional Planning Department. In 2010 the Washington Chapter URISA (Urban & Regional Information Systems Association) presented Ian with The Summit Award for his contributions to the Washington State GIS Community. Ian is currently the Vice President of the WAURISA Board and the current Chair of the Washington State Geographic Information Council and in 2010 was nominated and elected to the Board of Directors of the National States GIS Council (NSGIC) where he severed a two year term. In September of 2012 Ian was given an Outstanding Service Award by NSGIC for his service to the National States Geographic Information Council. Ian is still an active member of NSGIC where he currently co-chairs the NG911working group.
